To ride inside a tube successfully, a surfer must position themselves in such a way that they enter the wave just ahead of the breaking section. They then ride along the curved face of the wave while staying ahead of the collapsing lip of the wave behind them. The goal is to stay inside the tube for as long as possible before eventually exiting, either through the open end of the tube or by being engulfed as the wave closes out.
